Recommended Reference Books dealing with EO Chemistry

Selected and annotated by Dr. Bill Kurtin

Robert Tisserand and Robert Young , Essential Oil Safety: A Guide for Health Care Professionals. Second Edition ( Elsevier Health Sciences, 2013)
A comprehensive, technically excellent, and accurate reference book on essential oils and their uses. A book better suited for those individuals more interested in the scientific foundations behind aromatherapy. Thousands of literature references are included.

Handbook of Essential Oils: Science, Technology, and Applications, Eds. K. Husnu Can Baser, Gerhard Buchbauer (CRC Press, 2015)
A massive reference work that focuses mainly on the biology, chemistry, and pharmacology of essential oils. Like others in the Handbook series from CRC Press, this book is a database of technical information, and should be on the shelf of anyone who is a serious student and practitioner of aromatherapy

Jane Buckle, RN, Ph.D., Clinical Aromatherapy: Essential Oils in Health Care, Third Edition (Churchill Livingstone, 2015)
A thoroughly referenced work on the use of essential  oils to treat a large array of medical problems and diseases. An excellent resource for the aromatherapy and/or medical practitioner.

Shirley Price and Len Price, Aromatherapy for Health Professionals, Fourth Edition ( Churchill Livingstone, 2011)
A good general reference book for the practicing aromatherapist. Includes numerous examples of research and case studies. The section on chemistry reads very easily.

E. Joy Bowles, The Chemistry of Aromatherapeutic Oils, Third Edition (Allen & Unwin, 2003)
A very good reference book overall for chemical information about essential oils. The practitioner will find the chapters on functional groups and pharmacology the most useful. The first chapter on basic chemistry needs to be updated, and some of the drawings of atomic and molecular structure are misleading.
